Ipswich West State Special School has a proud history of providing quality education to students with diverse learning needs. Originally established as the Ipswich West Opportunity School on 30 January 1973, the school was housed in the renovated Ipswich West Boys School building, which had been unused for several years. Over the decades, the school has grown and evolved, with significant upgrades to its facilities, including additional classrooms, therapy spaces, and specialised learning areas. In the early 1980s, the school was renamed Ipswich West Special School to better reflect its purpose and mission.
Today, Ipswich West State Special School is a co-located campus with Ipswich West State School, offering a supportive and inclusive P-12 learning environment. Our dedicated staff provide individualised programs tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, fostering their academic, social, and personal growth.
As we look to the future, our school is undergoing an exciting transition. From 2027, Ipswich West State Special School will become a Years 1-12 campus. Our current prep and year 1 students have the opportunity, if they want, to transition to the new primary special school which is co-located with Leichhardt State School. In the years ahead, our school will evolve into a dedicated Years 7-12 high school campus, continuing to provide high-quality education and support for students in their secondary years.
We are proud of our rich history and remain committed to creating a safe, respectful, and engaging environment where every student is empowered to achieve their full potential.
