Adopt-a-Cop Program

Ipswich West Special School has been involved in the Adopt-a-Cop program since September 2014.  Adopt-a-Cops are police officers and Police Liaison Officers who volunteer to participate in the program. The appointment of a Police Officer to the school has helped to build positive relationships between Police and members of the school community including students, staff, Parents and Carers.

There are several roles of an Adopt-a-cop within the school including:

  •  Delivering classroom presentations in partnership with teachers
  • Delivering presentations to parents, carers, teachers and other school staff
  • Attending key school events, such as fetes, swimming carnivals and/or sports days
  • Addressing school parades
  • Conducting informal “drop in” visits, particularly during break times
  • Attending meetings, such as Parents and Citizens
  • Attending school excursions and/or camps
There are numerous benefits of the program for the school community including:
  • The enhanced safety and wellbeing of children through education
  • Positive attitudes of children towards police and the community
  • The encouragement of law abiding behaviour
